JASMEN: Dragons

Jasman made at least three dragons.  They are about a foot tall and have an 18" wing span.  The wings fold up. These were fairly cheap when they were first released.  I like these better than some of the newer dragons even if the detail is not as good.  These were available for a few years in the mid 2000s.

Make that four dragons.  My friend Joseph found a fourth dragon style among his collection.   I have added some pictures.

BLUEBOX: Pirate Crew

I just came across this new skeleton pirate playset from Bluebox. This set is exclusive to Target, like the Toy Major sets that are exclusive to Toys R Us. Unlike the Toy Major set, these are real skeleton pirates, not just skeleton warriors v. pirates.  The figures are about 50mm.  There are five skeleton pirates and five living pirates.   The accessories include a craggy skull mountain, a shark, a palm tree, a rowboat, bone cages and a bunch bone rail fence sections.  Not a bad set.  I hope Bluebox  makes some more fantasy themed sets.

Bluebox is working on an Orcs v. Elves fantasy set.  Stad's has some pictures.

FANTASY PLAYSETS FOR SALE

Joseph Svec III, a good friend and fellow collector I know is thinning out his collection.  These fantasy playsets are just a small faction of Joseph's collection of toy castles and knights.  He is the author of "Toy Castles and Knights: A Guide to Toy Castles & Knights from all Around the World," which is the best guide book for toy knights, castles and medieval playsets I have seen.  There is an excellent chapter on Swords and Sorcery playsets.  I began corresponding with him after I purchased a copy of his book.  He is a real gentleman, and knows his stuff.  I believe that he is the original owner of most, if not all, of the figures and playsets he is offering.   I have purchased from him myself and I can vouch that what I received was of the highest quality and very well packaged.

If you are interested in any of these sets, or would like a list of dozens of other outstanding medieval and historical playsets he has available, you can email Joseph at Joseph.svec@earthlink.net.  You can buy a copy of his book at Toy Knights.

This is great stuff at fair prices.  Get them while you can.

SCS DIRECT: Big Bucket of Monsters

I just found this new set of 13 plastic figures from SCS Direct on Amazon.  They are about 50-54mm and come in light and dark gray.  There are 11 monster figures and 2 graves.  The demons and cyclops are the best fantasy figures, but they all have some charm. The running mummy is very strange.  I think of mummies as lurching, staggering things.  It is a strange mix.  The vampire, mummy, werewolf, lagoon creature and Frankenstein's monster are clearly a nod to the classic Universal Studios monsters of the black and white film era.  The giant moth is not really even actual moth size.  It does not really work as a counterpart to the Godzilla figure.

This is the same company that put out the Big Bucket of Zombies.  I love that they put out such big series.  You don't see series of 10+ figures sold all together very often these days.  This set comes in the same kind of plastic tube as the Big Bucket of Zombies, which does not hold up very well.  I would like to see this company take a shot at a real fantasy set.

I have recently learned that SCS is working on a fantasy set.  My friend Joseph Svec emailed the company to complement them on the monsters set.  Someone at the company wrote back to him and said they were already working on a fantasy set.  I can't wait.

Joseph recently heard that the fantasy set will be ready next Spring.
